General Assistant in the Pet Crematorium and Cattery            9 March 2010
 

We require a general assistant to work with staff in both the pet crematorium and the cattery. We require a person who is able to carry out a physically demanding job quickly and to a high standard. Attention to detail and a care for the well-being of animals and owners is essential. Previous experience is not essential. The job will  suit anyone wishing to pursue work within the pet industry. The applicant will need to be able to work on their own and still maintain quality and speed. The work covers all areas of the business apart from the office duties. A clean driving license is required and the applicant should be a confident driver.

 

The work will be split between the crematorium and the cattery with some lighter groundwork occasionally required in the Cemetery More cattery work is likely to be needed during the holiday seasons.

 

Crematorium duties: Helping to prepare ashes after the cremation. Assisting in packing ashes for return to clients. Keeping the crematorium and mortuary areas clean and tidy. Collections of pets from veterinary surgeries and clients’ homes and delivering ashes back. Assisting with burials in the Pet Cemetery. There is scope for training as an operator in the crematorium. This would raise the level of responsibility and the rate of pay would reflect this.

 

Cattery Duties: Monitoring and changing litter trays. Monitoring and feeding cats. Daily chalet cleaning. Extensive major cleaning of the chalets on departure. Setting up the chalets for the next boarders. Disinfecting and washing water bowls. Laundry. Keeping kitchens, offices and work areas clean. Possible evening sessions which would involve grooming, medications and general care of the cats. Some grounds work and other light maintenance duties in quiet times. Collection and delivery of cats from clients’ homes.

 

Hours: 8.30am –4pm Sunday to Thursday with flexibility to cover some weekend days and public holidays if required. Shorter hours may be possible with reduced duties. Some evening work may be available.

 

Holidays: 5.6 weeks per annum, which would include public holidays. Leave is accrued on the basis of hours worked. Statutory sick pay applies.

 

Rate of pay: £6.50 - £7.50 per hour depending on experience. Additional increases will depend on skills and duties performed. Higher rates may be appropriate for applicants with particular skills.
